Redneck stereotypes: We only shop at Wal Mart

in redneck •  2 years ago

There are a number of websites out there that are dedicated to the crazy sorts of folks that end up at a Wal Mart, especially at night. Sometimes I feel like this is just a trend and the people are actually dressing up to go to shop intentionally looking like a weirdo in order to attempt to go viral. I've never seen anyone in our local Wal Mart that looked like these sorts of people, but then again, I'm not there all the time. They could be there, I'm not sure.

I saw a post somewhere that someone was accusing a conservative country person of sorts of being a backwoods redneck and one of the things that this person was attacked with is accusing him of only shopping at Wal Mart, which is guess was meant to suggest that he is low class, poor, or lacking in taste.

Sure Wal Mart isn't exactly the epicenter of high fashion or anything, and yes, I have purchased clothes there before, but I think it is really arrogant to suggest that people that shop at a place that has good values must somehow be of lower class or intelligence than someone who shops at boutique fashion stores.

As a redneck myself, I don't place a great deal of importance on fashion at all and it would be easy and correct to suggest that as a group, rednecks don't see a great deal of importance in fashion or even the sorts of things that you would buy at Sharper Image or something like that. It doesn't make sense to most country people to spend $100 on a shirt that Wal Mart or somewhere similar, has something nearly exactly the same for 1/10 the price. To us, it is completely backwards that someone would do that sort of thing.

I was at Wal Mart the other day and I regularly shop there. Would you like to know who else in this part of the country also shops at Wal Mart? Literally everyone. We have a Target as well and sometimes when I'm feeling fancy I'll go over there instead but I know a good value when I see one and I don't understand why anyone wouldn't go shopping at a place where the prices are lowest. I suppose you could make the argument that we should shop at local stores instead of the big boys in order to support small business but I think that in the past 30 years or so we have found that this notion is a lost cause. Wal Mart and the like are eventually going to win in the end - they always do.

To me it seems like such a New York or L.A. thing to say when you talk to someone about shopping where they do and somehow equate that to being low class. Well if shopping where the values are the best makes me low class than just like the "redneck" moniker, I'm willing to accept it. I'll use all the money I am saving to help dull the pain that your silly words have inflicted upon me.

And to suggest that we ONLY shop at Wal Mart would be untrue. Wal Mart in some sort of virtue-signaling move that happened a few years ago stopped carrying guns and ammo, so we have to shop at a gun store on the way home from Wal Mart as well.
