He performs his penance on the day of Holy Wednesday in a procession lasting three to four hours.

HISTORY

The image of the Nazarene of San Pablo is that of the devotion of every son of Caracas. It is a carving in pinewood flanders of Seville, Spain, possibly Felipe de Ribas in the seventeenth century. Tradition says that the sculptor, after finishing carving the image, the Nazarene appears to him and says: "Where have you seen me how perfect you have made me?"

She was taken to Caracas, receiving veneration first in the chapel of St. Paul, and that is where her name comes from Nazareno de San Pablo. Legend has it that, in the year 1597, the city struck an epidemic of plague of black vomit or scurvy, and popular devotion to the image, was taken out in prayer. During the procession he passed through an orchard near his temple, sown with lemon trees, and a cluster of lemons was entangled among the crown of thorns of the Nazarene, some falling to the ground. The devotees picked them up, giving them as medicine to the sick, who were healed promptly.

The image was consecrated on July 4, 1674 by Fray González de Acuña, and was worshiped in the chapel of San Pablo until in 1880 President Guzmán Blanco ordered its demolition, raising the same place the municipal theater. The same president ordered the erection in honor of his wife the Basilica of Santa Teresa, the image being transferred to this new temple, where it is venerated today.

WHERE THE WORSHIP IS MADE

In 1880, the anticlerical Guzmán Blanco ordered the destruction of the temple of San Pablo. This was because I had problems with the Catholic sectors of the country and with the clergy of the Church. And in that same place the Municipal Theater was inaugurated that was inaugurated in 1881. One of the most curious legends of the Nazarene is that it is said that when Guzman Blanco inaugurated the theater, being in his presidential box he saw the Nazarene who asked him where is he my church ?, and they say that he told what happened to his wife and from there the construction of the church of Santa Teresa was born.

But in reality President Guzmán Blanco, in honor of his wife Ana Teresa Ibarra, ordered the construction of the Basilica of Santa Teresa and Santa Ana, what we call the Basilica of Santa Teresa and there was taken the Nazareno de San Pablo, where it is located. today.

ICONOGRAPHY

Today, the remembrance of the Nazarene has the particularity of mobilizing Venezuelans from great distances, to the main churches of the country where the tradition has reached a remarkable prestige.
