Charity is great for the soul!
But did you know you can give to charitable organizations and still not have the right spiritual attitude about charity?
Below is My Favorite Charitable Organization List, but let us examine the Bible first to improve your spiritual well being as you generously give to your favorite causes...
A Spirit of Charity in Your Mind and Soul
1 Corinthians 13:1-7
1 Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not charity, I am become as sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal.
2 And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries, and all knowledge; and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, and have not charity, I am nothing.
3 And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, and have not charity, it profiteth me nothing.
4 Charity suffereth long, and is kind; charity envieth not; charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up,
5 Doth not behave itself unseemly, seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil;
6 Rejoiceth not in iniquity, but rejoiceth in the truth;
7 Beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things.
Notice this passage from Corinthians says you can have faith to move mountains and bestow ALL your goods to feed the poor, but if you do not have a spirit of charity, you are nothing.
Having a spirit of charity means that your giving comes from a gladness from within to give of yourself in many ways. To help people (friends, family, neighbors, co-workers, strangers) meet a need they have and to do so with happiness in your heart.
More Scripture on Charity
1 Timothy 1:5
5 Now the end of the commandment is charity out of a pure heart, and of a good conscience, and of faith unfeigned:
1 Peter 4:8
8 And above all things have fervent charity among yourselves: for charity shall cover the multitude of sins.
Charity is the end of the commandments, the last thing that you put on as a Christian and is the greatest of all the previous spiritual gifts that you have developed in your Christian life.
Though you may be meek and humble in the Lord if you do not show mercy in a spirit of charity to all those who you meet and deal with every day, then you are missing the point of 'love they neighbor.'
Jesus enduring the suffering of the cross to save sinners is the greatest example of charity.
An act of charity is an act in humility when you do not boast about it or seek reward in return.
Jesus' Command to Be Charitable
Matthew 25:35-40
35 For I was an hungred, and ye gave me meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me drink: I was a stranger, and ye took me in:
36 Naked, and ye clothed me: I was sick, and ye visited me: I was in prison, and ye came unto me.
37 Then shall the righteous answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee an hungred, and fed thee? or thirsty, and gave thee drink?
38 When saw we thee a stranger, and took thee in? or naked, and clothed thee?
39 Or when saw we thee sick, or in prison, and came unto thee?
40 And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.

A Christian without charity should not be called a Christian ... The Lord showed in many passages the importance of helping others without expecting anything in return.
