Getting started loading your own ammunition can seem like an intimidating task. In truth, only 4 pieces of equipment are needed to get started.
Reloading Press-This is the workhorse of a loading operation. The press uses a lever system to gain a mechanical advantage making loading operations easier. A new Lee Classic Turret Press runs about $120. However, shopping around gunshows and online auctions can often result in a used RCBS Rockchucker (the best press in my opinion) for under $100.

Priming Tool-This is the means by which the fresh primer is inserted into the primer pocket of the case. There are priming tools that attach to the press such as the Lee Ram Prime ($15) but, I prefer a hand priming tool. My choice is the RCBS Hand Priming Tool for around $40 new. I would not shy away from a used hand priming tool as there is very little that can go wrong. A little patience and digging can usually net a used priming tool for under $20.

Powder Scale-There are many options when it comes to measuring powder. It can be measured by both weight and volume. The safest and most consistent method is a mechanical powder scale. This is not something I would buy used. Lee makes a nice little scale for around $30 that will last a lifetime if it is taken care of.

Dies/shellholder-Loading dies screw into the press. They usually come in 2 or 3 die sets. A 2 die set will consist of a depriming/sizing die and a bullet seating dies. Three die sets will additionally include a neck expanding die. The shellholder snaps into the ram of the press to hold the case head. Lee offers their Pacesetter 3 die sets including a shell holder in over 50 calibers for under $40 each. However, money can be saved by buying used dies which can be had frequently for $10 and under.

This is pretty much the setup I started on. It is not fast or ment to be. Only suggestion I have to upgrade is go digital on the scale. Lyman pocket scale is about $35 now. I have loaded with both presses mentioned RCBS is much better even used over a Lee.

Good suggestion on the digital scale. I've never used one but, I should have included that as an option. I also agree about the RCBS vs. Lee press. I have used both but, prefer the RCBS hands down.
