I love DIY - But don't tell my Wife! - The Stair Rail Project

Do It Yourself - In the Stairwell!

A few afternoon's I come home from work to find that my lovely other half had decided to pull the railing from our stairwells because they looked pretty shabby. After agreeing with her, I sighed (again) and started to think through what I needed to do to 'fix' yet another fixer-upper job at my house.

I have previously blogged about the various renovations I have done around my house, both big and small, and I am currently half-way through painting the outside of our house also. So to come home from the first week of work and see yet another project needing my attention, I.............. obeyed my better half and flew into action.

When I got home, the hand rails from the stairs were already removed and, bless her soul, she had stripped the rails of their paint and had started to stain them. Little did she know that they were actually a manufactured MDF type wood and they looked utterly shit unpainted. We both didn't like the rails anyway so the solution was to remove, patch and replace them.

This is the first part of the DIY.
First I stripped the wall where the rails were removed and gave it a light sand:

Here are the rails stripped down and stained slightly:

I then put a coat of plaster over the areas to patch them up:

Next will be to sand, re-plaster and sand again. After a coat of paint and new rails the job will be done. I will post the finished walls with the new rails when finished in the coming week.

Thanks for reading.

You are the best renovation @scooter77

Are you going to use the old railing or are you buying/building something new?

Something brand new. Some nice wood!

You probably know this but make sure that rail is secured properly. If it’s just screwed into drywall it’ll hold up fine until someone falls. Then you might be looking at some major holes and a hurt person.

Love it, my wife nags me to get the Reno’s done, love the Reno’s not the nagging haha
