During my walk yesterday I stopped to use the restroom that was located at a public dock near the Penny Bridge. I wasn’t thinking about it so I didn’t take pictures. I worked for a day camp 20 years and I was camper from the time I was 7 until maybe 12 and it was located at a town park. Some things have changed but I’m sure the bathrooms haven’t because the ones by the dock are the same. They’re poorly lit, they’ve got spiders, you’re lucky if they’ve stocked them with soap, paper towels, and toilet tissue.
As somebody that has managed to get around without a car I’ve had to answer the call of nature at less than convenient times. I could spend a half hour walking to my bus stop but when I get there I’ve got to go. It’s surprising how many business ideas you can come up with when you’re trying not to piss your pants. Since I’m a fan of the Humanure Handbook I thought I wonder if I could set up public restrooms next to bus suburban bus stops utilizing the designs from that book. Technically they wouldn’t be composting toilets they’d only collect the excrement for it to be composted elsewhere. The structure would utilize designs by Tumbleweed Houses because many of them are intended to be made on flatbed trailers. Water would be supplied by an atmospheric water generator. Though I doubt the health department would allow me to operate.
When I started imagining my Game of Thrones OC character I included this idea as well. After being a sellsword I acquire some land along with shops in poorer districts of the cities. I start paying the smallfolk to use my public privies. Since the smallfolk see me carting off buckets containing shit they gave the nickname Lord of the Flies. The land I was given was barren but I made it bloom. Now I hope to do that in real life.
I’d recommend the Humanure Handbook for anyone interested in composting or those into SHTF scenarios because when the grid goes down your shit has to go somewhere.
I say implement this stuff before SHTF its more economic, better on the environment, your living more independently, and if things get back you are already doing something that would be needed anyways.

Very true. Even though my utilities are covered through rent I've seen people have their water bills continue to rise. Composting and rainwater harvesting would help immensely.
