Under What Scenario Would You Retire Today?

If you're a fan of NFL football, then you're likely well aware that one of the most surprising events in the past two decades took place this past weekend. NFL star and 2018 Comeback Player of the Year Andrew Luck retired. The leader and captain of the Indianapolis Colts hung up his cleats at the age of just $29, giving up hundreds of millions of dollars (literally) to live life outside of football.

Since the announcement, there has been a lot of speculation as to what might have contributed to this suprising announcement. Luck battled injuries for years and likely has more than enough capital to live a full and happy life without having to work again.

My question to you is, under what circumstances would you retire today and never look back? What would need to happen for you to do that?

My Answer

For me to retire today comfortably, I would probably need to win the lottery. I would need at least $3-5M to ensure I could pay off debts and support my family for the next 40-50 years. I wish I didn't need this type of dumb luck, especially being 5 years older than Andrew Luck, but that's what would need to happen.
