EXTROPIA’S RETRO-GAMING
LED STORM
“Led Storm” was a multi-platform game that was published by Capcom and came out around 1987. Gameplay wise, it can best be described as a ‘Spyhunter clone’. That is to say, it was a top-down racer.
Your task in Led Storm was to take part in a futuristic race that stretched across a fictional country. The tracks included elevated highways built above a cityscape, and a desert track that wound its way through a canyon and the rib cage of some long-dead monster.
Although this is clearly a racer (you compete against another competitor to cross a finish line, and have to weave in and out of traffic) it always seemed to me that Led Storm played more like a memory test.
This was due to the way the track would frequently split, with some sections offering a safe route while others lead to disaster. The track’s scrolled past really quickly, and so you couldn’t really react to what was coming and instead had to memorise the route through a process of trial and error.
I never managed to make it all the way to the last stage. The game required some pinpoint jumping in order to safely keep your car from falling off the narrow tracks o crashing into traffic. Still, it kept me coming back, so I guess there as something compelling about it.
