Retro games have a very strong cult following, so much so that today's game developers and publishers are actually making games that have the same look and feel of old classics but with a modern twist.
Here is 5 modern retro games that you should start playing today.
5 – Retro City Rampage
the 80's and 90's was the turning stone for gaming and this game includes everything great about that time. The game is designed to look very similar to the original Grand Theft Auto game with a top down view.It plays pretty much the same as GTA but it includes everything great like the DeLorean from Back to the Future, the A team with Mr T. and even Knight rider / KIT managed to squeeze in there. Very fun game and very addictive.
4 – MegaMan 9
Yup,believe it or not Mega man is still around, and in 2008 the game developers took the game back to its roots. A simple 2d platform that lets you take control of the man in blue so you can defeat the robot masters. Apart from the numerous side missions you can complete if you just need a quick fix, but they also included some of the best 8bit boss battles in history and even added new attacks like time attack. This is nostalgia for the modern gamer.
3 – Meat Boy
Inspired by the original platform games such as Mario, Kirby and Ghosts and Goblins, this game takes all that was great about them games, added some much needed gore and created a massive... and I mean 300 levels massive game that will keep you entertained for hours as you try to survive each one in the effort of saving Meat Boy's beloved Bandage Girl. You have to dodge a series of ever lethal weapons and machines to stop being diced like a piece of meat.
2 – Undertale
My lad loves this game and actually wore a Sans costume for Halloween this year. Who knew a skeleton could be so loved? The game actually makes you think about what it is you are doing as the consequences of your decisions will have huge effects in game making it either more or less difficult. The Puzzles are surprisingly difficult and the overall game mechanics are something that old gamers like me love and new young gamers can't get enough off.
1 – Shovel Knight
The whole look and feel of this games speaks Duck tales, Mario 3 and Ghosts and goblins, but no way near as hard to play from the get go. You are only armed with a suit of armour and a shovel to fight the Order of NoOrder. You will always be laughing your arse off as you kill your enemies while hitting them over the head with a shovel and weeping like a baby at the love story between shovel night and shield knight, there are a ton of DLC available for the game that keeps old and newcomers to the game occupied for hours on end. An 8 bit style game that has all the greatness of the classics but with modern touches throughout.
It is not that often a 2d style, 8 bit game is released for the modern consoles or PC, but when they do, they attract all the retro lovers among us and are 9 times out of ten, a huge hit and it's easy to see why. Less in this case is defiantly more.
