I'm not sure what to say about this ad. I'm not sure that having a blind guy promote your VIDEO game system, no matter how famous and talented, is really an effective thing to do. This ad for the Atari 2600 came out in 1981, near the height of the 2600's popularity. I know 1981 was a different time, but do you think these quotes from the ad would make you buy one?

"My friends tell me the graphics are the best"

"Even Stevie can fumble his way through a joystick"

"Stevie likes to play alone even if he has no idea what's happening"

And it doesn't get any better.

You can imagine the advertising execs doing lines of Colombian baking powder trying to come up with an ad for a games console when they probably didn't even know what it did. Stevie Wonder was the outcome.

It would be interesting to know what agency came up with this ad. The 2600 had been around a while at this point. I wonder if they had recently changed ad agencies or something...

I reckon they changed soon after ha ha

This is one of those ads that would NEVER get approved today. Could you imagine the outrage this ad would cause if ran today?

I left out one of the best quotes: "You don't need two people to play with an Atari 2600...or even two eyes."

Both awkward and pretty funny !

I am old enough to remember the Atari don't know what my kids would think of it . Cheers mike
