Cover of the July/August 1990 issue of Nintendo Power
In the Summer of 1990, though the Sega Genesis and TurboGrafx-16 had been released, the NES (and Game Boy) were still kings and the Super Nintendo was still on the horizon.
The July/August issue of Nintendo Power includes:
Features
- Final Fantasy - Part 2 of a review/strategy guide for the first game in this epic series.
- Rescue Rangers - Chip 'N Dale's Rescue Rangers may have been targeted towards a younger audience but it was a solid platformer.
- Snake's Revenge - Another series that seems to keep going and going, this was the second game in the Metal Gear series and the second one on the NES.
- Golgo 13: The Mafat Conspiracy - This was the second game in the Golgo 13 series. While it was an obscure series, relatively speaking, the games were pretty good. They had sort of a James Bond theme with multiple play styles throughout the game (2D side-scrolling action, 1st person, etc.).

Special Features
- CES Report - New Nintendo related stuff at the 1990 Summer CES included Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Mega Man III, Miracle Keyboard, Dr. Mario, Deja Vu, The Simpsons, Beetlejuice, and more.
- Game Boy - The Game Boy had been out less than a year at this point. Several games are featured here including Double Dragon, Wizards and Warriors: Fortress of Fear, Final Fantasy Legend, Spider-Man, Penguin Wars, Dexterity, Paperboy and more.
- New Games - Featured new releases including Dungeon Magic, Dragon Spirit, Spot, Little League Baseball, and Captain Skyhawk among others.
- Ninja Gaiden II: The Dark Sword of Chaos - Not an actual strategy guide but a sneak peak at one that would be included in a future issue of Nintendo Power.
- Howard and Nester - A monthly comic that featured two adventurers adventuring in various Nintendo games. This month the game was Super C.

Previews
- Castlevania III - Preview of the third game in the Castlevania series. This one is set long after the original.
- Maniac Mansion - The classic LucasArts adventure game.
- Mission: Impossible - Based on the TV show of the same name. I preferred the similarly named Impossible Mission myself but that was on the Commodore 64.
- Video Shorts - Brief looks at recent releases, this month including Adventures in the Magic Kingdom, Rad Racer II (I think I only played the first one), World G.P., Wizardry, Arkista's Ring, Pinball Quest (I remember buying this one on clearance...it was a decent game), Wall Street Kid, Heavy Shreddin', Boulder Dash, Bad News Baseball, Battle Chess, Jeopardy!, Pictionary, Silkworm, Image Fight, The Last Starfighter, and Mechanized Attack.
