Battletoads 4 Player Co-Op Mode Created by Fans

Anyone that says they can “one man” Battletoads on the NES is probably lying. This is one of the most difficult games ever created. What is funny is, Battletoads is also one of the more entertaining games ever released. It doesn’t take itself too seriously, throws slapstick comedy at the player, and still cranks the difficulty to hole in the wall from thrown controllers levels. The Rare classic may, or may not, have just gotten easier – that is for you to decide, if you have three friends available.

Fans have created a four-player hack of the classic controller throwing inducing game and released it to the world. This hack is not perfect, there are some problems with it – as there are often with games having extra players added over what was originally programmed. First, there is more slowdown and flicker because of the two additional toads on screen. Second, one of the toads will randomly change color in various levels – this is expected because of the limited colors available on screen that the NES can produce. Third, you may find yourself going through four times as many controllers now.

Unfortunately, that last part is currently unknown. Why? Because it is unclear if this hack runs on actual hardware. If it does then maybe, just maybe, it is compatible with four player adapters such as the Four Score or the NES Satellite. Anyone with the hardware to test this out?
