Book Review: The Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath

The Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath

The Bell Jar is a semi-autobiographical novel written by renowned poet, Sylvia Plath. It is also her only novel. Plath was first and foremost a poet. Her poetry collections include The Colossus and Ariel

The Bell Jar is a classic. If you'd like to see Plath's diversity in writing, you won't be disappointed in this novel. The story is solid and almost satisfactory, except for the ending, which I thought was a bit vague.

My score

7/10

7 out of 10. The Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath loses most points in the conclusive lines. That's only my opinion and shouldn't mean that you shouldn't read this book. I just firmly believe that a good and satisfying ending is absolutely necessary for a novel. Especially an ending that doesn't leave the reader with more questions than answers.

Please let me know what you think if you read this novel before, or have any suggestions for future reviews. :)

Thanks for sharing your book review on Sylvia Plath's "The Bell Jar," @jmvanbreda! You’ve just got a full upvote from us.

Although it is a somewhat dark semi-autobiography, the cover makes the novel appear very enticing for the reader. Would definitely add that book onto my "To Read" list. Looking forward to reading future reviews!
