Rhapsodist Writing Contest #7 – The Dust Cover Autobiography of a Life Not Lived

The seventh challenge of the Rhapsodist Writing Contest is to write the dust cover autobiography of the life you were not courageous enough to live. Our lives are fraught with different opportunities, paths, and choices we each need to make in an instant. However upon reflection, each of us realize at key points, had we decided differently, our lives would have been completely different. What is the dust cover biography of that other life?

For some inspiration, please check out the YouTube clip below from the movie The Family Man starring Nicholas Cage. In this YouTube clip, Jack Campbell (Nicholas Cage) had everything which classically defines success in the modern world. He is a wealthy investment banker with every creature comfort one could possibly imagine, but a single defining moment in his life could have led him to an unlived life and a new definition of success he has never considered. In this film, he has the opportunity to live that life in a "glimpse."

Good luck to all the participating authors. I look forward to reading some incredible flash fiction.

What is the Rhapsodist Writing Contest?

After judging two Artquest challenges, I found myself actively looking to bring a challenge of my own to the Steemit community. During my most recent interview with @kennyskitchen, we were discussing how we both missed the fiction and chapter books which used to be very actively published here on Steemit. Unfortunately, as Steemit grew, long-form chapter books generally did not do well.

It led me to look towards developing a writing challenge which would focus on flash fiction instead of long-form fiction and non-fiction. But I wanted the emphasis to be on stretching the creativity of the participating authors and challenging them to develop some incredible, unique content which will diversify the content pool on Steemit.

@theguruasia Rhapsodist Contest #6 winners will be announced on Wednesday, songou've not missed out congratulating the winners.

I appreciate the offer to contribute to the contest and I appreciate the recognition that I am paying the full freight of the prize money.

I do have to say thank you to my followers who consistently upvote these contests and my own content because without them, I would not be able to provide the prize money for this contest.

what a creativity!!

@sizuka I'm looking forward to reading the dust cover biographies of the participants. I'd like to see where their creative minds take them.

Now this one is quite a challenge. I hope I could come up with a good entry. ^___^

@lyxng I look forward to reading your entry once it's finished. I do enjoy seeing where the participants creative minds take them in these flash fiction challenges.

I was debating about putting up one my self (not for contest consideration), but I have not decided yet. I have to see if life outside Steemit cools down a bit before I decide to commit.

It was pretty deep, reflecting on this subject Uncle Faust, but alas, I was able to shorten this to under 500 words:

I'm looking forward to checking out your piece this week. I'd like to hear your dust cover biography.

Autobiography, means it cannot be fictional?

  ·  7 years ago (edited)

@soonmusic in the strictist sense, you are correct about autobiography = nonfiction. However, a life not lived is by definition fiction.

The idea of it being an autobiography would be elements of the existing timeline of your own life and narrating the story told from your own perspective. What happens in that "alternate timeline that never was" is all your creative mind at work.

Voted and resteemed, down to choose either poetry, prose or drama
