The gospel of Luke recounts the journey of Jesus from Galilee to the city of Jerusalem, where Jesus was to make his triumphal entry; and on this trip, Jesus did not perform many miracles or signs, but he did leave important teachings for his disciples to make them understand the meaning of the doctrine of the Kingdom of God, the dominion or empire of God's perfections.
And in one of these teachings, Lord Jesus made it clear that men have to choose between the love for the things of the world or the love for the spiritual realities. Greed, the desire for honors, and lust lead man down one path, while the spiritual gift of fear of God (constancy, firmness, devotion, and equanimity) leads to another path that is completely opposite.
And the gospel of Luke describes the words of Jesus when he taught on this spiritual question:
"´No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.´" Luke 16:13.
The gospel of Luke continues the story and as many people followed Jesus to listen to his teachings and see his miracles, the Pharisees who were oppressors mocked him and sought to find him in error to accuse him of being a false prophet; but Jesus, knowing the intentions of the hearts, condemned them with these words:
"The Pharisees, who loved money, heard all this and were sneering at Jesus. Then he said to them, ´You like to appear righteous in public, but God knows your hearts. What this world honors is detestable in the sight of God.´" Luke 16:14-15.
With these words Jesus showed a sign of his wisdom, and that the Kingdom of God consists in the search for true goods for man such as mercy and the contemplative life (eternal life), and not in the search for apparent goods such as money.
