Hackers can control research robots

A latest robotics study reveals a shocking news that research robots can allow hackers when they left unsecured on the internet. After allowing, hackers can control robots via remotely.

This robotic news unveils when Brown University researchers scanning webhosts who are using a robot operating system (ROS) across the world. The research performed in three different periods in 2017 and 2018 and found 100 exposed ROS systems.

However, a few unsecured research robots might not seem like a critical issue. But, some robots can accessible and controllable from the public Internet, these robots can control remotely that are dangerous to both the robot and the human operators.

What is ROS

Stefanie Tellex, a roboticist at Brown, said, “ROS is a great tool for robotics research, but the designers explicitly left security to the end users. It doesn’t require any authentication to connect to a ROS master, which means if you’re running ROS and it’s not behind a firewall, anyone can connect to your robot.”

While, in the 100 exposed systems, researchers look at each ROS system to find out Which are fully operational research robots? They found that 19 robots are real, then the research team contacted the owners of detected robots and other ROS instances.

Siddhartha Srinivasa, a computer science professor at the University of Washington, one of the owners of detecting robots. He conducts an online test to his team on robot’s functions for how to control a robot remotely?

After his test results, Srinivasa said, “these research robots can potentially move in ways endangers to the robot, as well as to the people operating the robot.”

As per Brown university, the study not to point out anyone it shows the loop holes of security in ROS. Also, the study may encourage security monitoring services. These findings explain that everyone must concentrate on security in the current digital world.
