Romanian history / Bogdan I the Founder / Episode 15

in romania •  7 years ago  (edited)

 Dear Steemians,

I present today Bogdan I the Founder of Moldavia (Romania)

Bogdan I, or Bogdan the Founder (born before 1307 - d. 1367) was voivode of Maramureş and ruler of Moldavia between 1363 and the end of 1367.

He is regarded as the founder of the Moldovan country, a state of its own, residing in Baia.

Noble Family : The Bogdăneștilor family

The roots of Bogdan I are in Maramures, where he was the heir of a great cneaz, composed of about 20 villages, with the center at Cuhea.

His dwelling at Cuhea was like a fortress situated on the left bank of Iza, on a small hill.

Bogdan I, the Romanian voivode of Maramures (1342-1345), having been in conflict with the king of Hungary since 1343, left in 1359 to pass the mountains to Moldova, where Sas, the son of Dragoş, had just died.

Accompanied by his sons and a small army, Bogdan I defeated the army of the descendants of Sas and banished the son of Balc, who was in charge after his father's death.

Ludovic I of Anjou tried to bring back the "rebellious Vlachs who have fallen from the path of fidelity", but without success.

The Hungarians tried by military action to recover the territory without succeeding in doing so. As a result of these repeated failures, the King of Hungary, Ludovic the Great, was forced to recognize Moldova's departure from his mastery.

The King had to abandon the idea of subjection to Moldova, and he was content with the confiscation of the domains that Bogdan I held in Maramures together with his brothers.

The royal diploma given to Balch by Ludovic I of Anjou on February 2, 1365 records the terrible wounds suffered by the Balc, and the cruel death of his brothers, relatives and servants. It was also noted that Bogdan I and his sons were not at the first act of rebellion against the King to which the devil had urged them several times. Thus, the prince of Bogdan I and the title of voivode of Maramures, who at that time was detained by nephew Stephen, are given to Balc, although his grandchildren, Stefan and John, did not accompany him to Moldova.

The Bogdana Monastery in Rădăuţi, converted by Bogdan I from the church to the monastery, is the place where he was buried, he now bears his name, Bogdana, and he can visit.

In this monastery was placed the bishopric established here by Alexander the Good, the great-grandson of Bogdan I.
