My #bookshelfchallenge was a total disaster.
I should have known that steem users prefer other things, like simple pictures, or throwing money at virtual cards.
Which for itself speaks books about them.
But I will start now something else.
Remember that book?
My memory is bad.
Really bad.
One could say non existing.
I cannot remember names and with things I read it is the same.
That is somehow sad, as I live reading books., but as soon as I finish them, wait what book?
:)
A mind of a goldfish.
But I want to have fun with this disability.
I will in this series describe what I remember from specific books and compare it later with their Wikipedia or goodreads summary.
I hope you all have fun.
There are some rules:
- I can look up title and author. Wouldn't make sense, just to write "that yellow book from that older guy"
- I will write my review first and look for any pages in goodreads or Wikipedia later.
- Spoilerwarning! Yes, I will reveal all hidden facts, as sometimes it is the only memory I have frome it. So be prepared to read, that Dumbeldore is Frodos godfather or any other shenanigans.
Anathem by Neal Stephenson
I bought that book as hardcover, that is a rare case. I prefer softcover cheap versions:)
I guess I did read it 10 years ago. So you are in for a treat.
The year is something something, I think it doesn't even take part on earth. In a millenia cloister monks follow their scientific purpose. Rewinding a clock, that shows the exact time for thousand of years. They use all kind of Metaphers that are a bit hard to decipher.
We all know Ockham's razer. But they use something rake or so. That got me confused a lot, as I was not always aware what is the topic of the discussion those monks have with each other.
And on top of that cloister is the astronomy section with some camera, that takes pictures.. Or is it just a guy looking through the glass and taking notes.
He dies.. I think.
Because he did see something, that would shake the foundation of their society. That camera/teleskop thing is made to picture the analemma, meaning the point of the sun at the same time every day. Here on earth it is a 8,if you do this for a year and project all pictures into one.
But there they seem to notice another new small star, this is moving and thereby getting closer to the planet.
Outside of the cloister is a simple feudal society, they seem to deliver daily goods to them. And this could lead to their breakdown, as those simple people still believe in god(s).
I have no idea, how the murder fits into that. Maybe there wasn't even one.
Spoiler.
But in the end, the ship makes contact.
And that cube(?) is filled with humans and lifeforms.
Those do not belong to this univers, their quantum signature is different(star trek term, not sure, what was used in the book). So they take some from that planet and as food they need also some animals and plants, as your body would not be able to process other dimensional proteins.
That seems to be the whole story. Hmm, I think I forgot one plot, because the book goes on and on about the society of the monks.
Holy shmoly.. Did I even read the book?
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anathem
I guess the main principle is right. Monks and aliens.
I can't even begin, where I was wrong or what is missing.
They went over the pole?
There is a war between humans and aliens?
Different factions on different nations and planets?
There are multiple dimensions interacting with each other, timelines getting thrown around?
Well, yeah, Jules Verne rings a bell, I might have forgotten his part.
This book has to be on my reading again list.
And now you can see, how bad my memory is. I didn't even try remember the names of major characters.
:)
Were to go from here?
Well, there are books, that I remember even less.
That is going to be fun:))
