I heard one time that you needed an hour's driving lesson for every year of your life to pass your test. I'm sure I'd had more than thirty-two when I finally passed at the third attempt.
Here's my lovely little Puma, a bit grubby from the weather.
My last driving instructor was fabulous, we would just chat away. I was working in a south London council which had two scandals going on, one very strange and complex that I didn't understand, and the other a straightforward corruption and fraud drama.
This provided much entertainment on our drives, our scandalised, gleeful chat punctuated by softly spoken low key guidance, "that's right, move into third," "accelerate gently, you've plenty of room," "you're doing fine, overtake when you're ready". After our first lesson, he said, "you drive perfectly, I can't understand why you've failed twice." He knew as well as I did, and kept my mind busy while we were driving so I didn't get time to think.
He watched me drive off when I took my test and told me his heart was in his mouth as he willed me to drive through an amber light and not stop (that would have been a fail). I passed, and he wouldn't let me drive home. No, he said, after all that excitement, this is when you might make a poor judgement.
I only had half a dozen lessons with him, every one of them great fun, building my confidence each time. I was touched that he came out to watch me (I didn't know he'd done that until afterwards) and the gentle care he gave me - right up until he dropped me at my front door.
We've not got much sunshine, but spring is here.
Today, as I was almost trotting round my third 3.6 km this week, I wondered whether you could apply a similar formula for running 5 km, as for learning to drive. So, if it takes a person of nmnmn age to train to run 5 km in 12 weeks, would it take an older person another week per year of their age to get there? That would be about another 15 weeks for me.
Today's outing, almost spot on at 3.71 km. I walked the rest more slowly 😊.
My opinion is that learning to drive isn't transferable to running distance.

I was wondering whether the process of learning to adapt was transferable.

Yes perhaps.

If someone has never run before, then you very well might be able to apply a formula like this. At least for conversational purposes. Have you considered signing up for a race? You might be surprised what you can do when you are all geared up and nervous, and surrounded by other people. I am certainly not suggesting you go out and get hurt, but it might be something to consider.

It's a good plan 😎 i've been thinking about this some more, I'll write about it in next week's results.

I had to have many lessons before I actually felt confident but failed my test twice anyway @shanibeer 😆 ... I've always been happy to be a pedestrian... Now I admire anybody who can run even a little.

I love driving, but never when I have to do anything. I always get the bus into town and the train when I am travelling longer distances. I walk for shopping (or get deliveries - cheaper than driving). The main thing the car is used for is going to the tip!
