There have been 6,219 confirmed named Russian deaths as of September 9th. This is an undercount obviously. Ukraine claims over 54,000 Russian troops have been killed as of September. As of early August, Western intelligence estimated ~20,000-25,000 Russian deaths.

At least 1,000 confirmed named deaths have been Russian officers. 277 have had the rank of major or above. 4 Russian generals have been confirmed killed. At least 11 generals are claimed to have been killed and their deaths not rebutted by the Russians.

After initially disclosing a limited amount of deaths in March, the Russian Ministry of Defense has stopped acknowledging any deaths and instead claims that a change in tactics has allowed the Russians to stop having deaths.

Oryx has visually confirmed at least 1,148 Russian tanks have been lost so far. That is about 35% of all operational tanks Russia had before the invasion (~3,300). This is an undercount as it only is of visually confirmed losses.

Most confirmed named deaths have come from the poorer "ethnic republics" of Russia.

In the initial months of the invasion, the VDV (airborne forces) and motorized rifle forces sustained the most casualties. During the last few months, the most casualties have been suffered by volunteer forces. Some of the heaviest casualties have been suffered by Russia's most combat-ready units like the VDV, Marines, and Special Operations.

Suffice to say, the Russian military is nothing like it was in January 2022. I have to imagine it will have consequences for regional security and influence in the former Soviet states and Russia's sphere of influence. Even without the losses, their image as a great power is significantly damaged.
