Germany has long relied on Russian natural gas. Now it's forced to buy U.S. natural gas, but critics complain because the U.S. uses fracking.

The perversity, though, is that Russian gas production probably emits more methane into the atmosphere per unit of energy produced than does U.S. gas production (unless you believe Russia, that is, and I don't know why anyone would). So shifting to U.S. gas is probably a net positive in terms of climate change.

But politics isn't about thinking seriously about policy; it's about tribalism, moral grandstanding, and playing on people's emotional responses.
