Saffron has remained to be a useful spice for centuries because of the health benefits it offers. It is also the most expensive spice in the world with its rates going anything between 500 to 5000 dollars per pound (nearly 450 grams). Its harvesting method makes the pricing go beyond a certain limit. Unlike harvesting of other plants, saffron takes about three years from the sowing of seeds to turning into flowers. This is not it as the saffron is harvested by hand from the Crocus Sativus flower, which requires more care than other plants.  The thread-like structure of the flower, which we call stigma is called saffron. A lot of these stigmas collectively produce a few grams of saffron. It is useful in a wide number of health problems ranging from enhancing libido to boosting mood and to improving memory.  Saffron contains an impressive variety of compounds that are believed to act as antioxidants meaning that those protect your cells against free radicals and oxidative stress. Saffron contains antioxidants such as Crocetin, Crocin, Kaempferol, and Safranal. The red color of saffron is due to carotenoid pigments like Crocin and Crocetin. It is also useful in the treatment of various types of fatal diseases such as skin cancer. Saffron is believed to have mood-boosting properties and that’s why it is popular among people who are suffering from stress-related properties.  Saffron is called a sunshine spice by many not because of its color but for its mood-boosting properties. It has been proved by five different studies where saffron supplements were given to people and the results were quite satisfying in the treatment of symptoms of mild-to-moderate depression. According to another study, 30 mg of saffron was as effective as Fluoxetine, Citalopram, and Imipramine, which are conventional treatments for depression.  The good thing about saffron is that it is easy to add to your diet because of its subtle taste. Also the aroma pairs well with savory dishes such as risottos, paella, and other rice dishes. There are many ways to add it to your daily routine like soaking the thread in mild water. You can purchase the saffron threads from the market available at most specialty markets.
