The Wasteland

in satire •  6 years ago

Before the end, the masses marched through the streets chanting the songs of revolution. As the singing became louder, the songs became more violent. The builders of the Old World fled from the cities as the masses came after all that they built. The new builders seized the tools of the old craftsmen and preached the start of the New World.

Thus, begun the decent into the Wasteland.

The problem with the new builders was that they were preachers and had no experience building. They were good at planning, but terrible at executing those plans. It turns out that the grandest and most intricate of plans are the most fragile in terms of implementation. It wasn't soon before the masses began to lose faith in the promises of preachers.

Doubt spread through the New World as it soon became evident that the builders of the Old World although unfair in their execution at least knew what it meant to build. The preachers slowly came to the realization that their words were become emptier and shallow with each repetition from their mouths.

Within the new guard was a small group of stubborn believers that felt that the reason for the shortcoming was not that of experience, but of a lack of commitment. They sought out to purge the doubters and began to remove the interface of the weakest preachers and the masses that were growing more and more anxious.

These purists soon turned on their fellow revolutionaries and rather than help them learn to rebuild a New World fairer than that of the old, they simply spent time demolishing the internal structures that had set up the Old World. As opposed to seizing the tools of the old builders, they sought to destroy them and built newer tools in the spirit of the revolution.

But this commitment to an impossible ideal built a New World on a foundation of quicksand. Soon, it became evident that the masses needed to work harder for less and the masses began to crave the stability and security of the Old World.

Rather than adjust to the underlying fragility of their ideology, the purges became stronger and more violent. The anger among the masses slowly began to dissipate as the strong dissenters disappeared and fear replaced the remaining passion left from the initial uprising.

Over time, people began to forget the vision of the preachers for the preachers were replaced with teachers. People began to forget the qualities of the Old World as they discovered the grand atrocities the Old World builders had committed against humanity. And they began to forgive the atrocities of the New World as they were necessary evils needed to avoid reverting back to the ideas of the Dark Age.

As we proceed in this Age of Light, there are those who still believe in the bright future they were instructed to believe. The world has never been better.

And yet there are some of us wondering the Wasteland drowning in fear and fighting for survival. We resent the builders of the New World as they resented the builders prior. Perhaps there are some in the shadows that hear the voices singing the old songs of a better world.

Let's go.

Who next will spark the flame that starts the next march? For this time we think know better. Let us build the world of our dreams, we start to preach. And let the masses watch as the builders of the Old World slaughter us all or perhaps watch us slowly decay into the monsters we vowed to slay.

To fear or be feared...
To control the uncontrollable...
To build a better world...
To free the world of need...
To cleanse the world of tyranny...

The cycle's strength is dependent on those that try to escape. Resistance against entropy is futile. The problem was never the builders. The problem is time. Eternal towers of complexity warp at the whims of chaotic resolution. A system can only take so much tension before the release.

Let go.
