Sorry for this late post. Today, the 12th April is the Net Neutrality day and chances are that you might have seen the hashtags #savethenet and #netneutrality trending on social media. I will explain what this campaign is and how it could affect you.
#NetNeutrality is a movement that defends the internet service industry from capitalism. The Federal Communications Commission is the body which regulates US ISPs and telecoms. This year President Trump appointed a new boss to it, and the new boss wants to induce capitalism into the network operator industry.
Opponents of the net neutrality campaign are mostly ISPs who want to have the right to be able to directly monetize their services by charging websites for premium services. Now the US Federal Communications Commission wants to side with the telecoms, and this why you the #SaveTheNet and #NetNeutrality campaign is mad.
In the event where the ISPs have their way, the potential consequences could include:
- businesses being able to pay ISPs to block websites of competitors
- ISPs throttling the speed of particular websites indiscriminately
In effect, if the ISPs have their way, they would be able to censor websites which do not pay them a premium fee.
Today is the day chosen by the supporters of the net neutrality to make commemorate the movement and further state their petition louder to attract more people. Official links to the protest include:
