Introduction

Emptiness, loneliness and sadness are the company of a heart that stops receiving the divine light of life.

Hawthorn and dust from the sand that emerges from a desert stirred by storms.

It can be affirmed with certainty that no believer has avoided going through those "deserts" in which he does not feel the presence of God. It is a problem that we have all had to face at some point along the way.

There are many factors that can make us feel distanced from our heavenly Father. Let's review some of them:

• Sometimes our accuser, the devil, whispers in our ears and we are deceived.

• It is also possible that these times of "distancing" become opportunities for God to bring us closer to him. They can serve to show us that we need to do some kind of internal cleaning and "put the house in order".

• Unconfessed sin is an important cause that makes us feel further away from God. Although our faults do not affect God's unconditional love for us, they can open a spiritual gap between us and Him.

Throughout the book of judges, we see how the nation of Israel sinned and decayed in its devotion to the Lord. Many times, when our hearts become entangled with disobedience and the things of this world, God allows us to experience a sense of distance between Him and us. This is exactly what Israel must have felt in those dark days.

People must have recognized their spiritual poverty. Instead, they continued to worship Baal without respect for God's holiness and deep love for them. That is the reason why He allowed them to go through a probationary period. In Judges 6: 6 we read: "So Israel was impoverished because of Midian: and the children of Israel cried unto the Lord." Here we see in action an important principle in terms of repenting and regaining favor with the Lord.

When we realize our mistake and cry out to the Lord, He comes to us. However, it never arrives as if responding to a superior's call. It comes when our hearts are broken and we finally recognize how much we need it. If we humbly confess our sins and our dependence on Him, He hears our prayers and frees us from sin (Judges 8:28, 1 Jn 1: 9).

If you are experiencing a stage of coldness in your relationship with God, do not hesitate to come to Him in prayer. Confess any known sins and ask them to restore the sweetness of their divine communion in your heart.
