A groundbreaking discovery was made by LIGO and Virgo observatory on August 17th, 2017 as they detected for the first time ever gravitational waves from two colliding and merging neutron stars. The advanced tip on the collision allowed the detection of Radio and X-Ray emissions were found a few days later coming from the same neighbourhood.
The light coming from the collision showed spectral traces of Lanthanides, strongly suggesting that the merging of neutron stars have been responsible for the creation of heavy elements like Gold and Platinum.
The discovery was officially announced at Washington DC yesterday, and can be seen in full length here.
