Judging Based On Looks

Is It Possible to Judge Character and IQ From Facial Expressions?

Everyone has heard the term 'wide-eyed idealist.' Webster defines it as 1 : having or marked by unsophisticated or uncritical acceptance or admiration : naive wide–eyed innocence. 2 : having the eyes wide open especially with wonder or astonishment. When I saw Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez for the first time, and heard some of the astonishingly stupid shit that came out of her mouth, I said to myself, "That doesn't surprise me in the least, I mean, look at her." Then I got to thinking. How accurately can a person's character or intelligence be determined just from looking at them? After all, the human face connotes fear, joy, anger, etc., so why not sanity, goodness, evil, or stupidity?

As a person who is not afraid to judge, and is also a natural born critic, I feel as though I am pretty good at summing up a person fairly quickly just from their face. Now let me say that I am not 100% accurate because in this stupid culture of ours we have to do that for some reason. Obviously, I am not going to be correct every single time. However, if some studies could be done to help us develop that skill (because some people are going to be more perceptive and thus better at it than others), then would that not be a nice tool to have?

Well, as it turns out, this has been studied. The Public Library of Science One is a peer-reviewed open access scientific journal that did report some work on this endeavor. Researchers from the Czech Republic did a study with a very small sample size, but all they really found out is that, like me, people do judge the I.Q. of others based on their facial traits such as how far apart a person's eyes are for example. Sadly, they conclude, "...we found no correlation between morphological traits and real intelligence measured with IQ test, either in men or women." It was all about "perceived" intelligence, and not actual intelligence.

Then I saw this headline, "ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE CAN IDENTIFY 'GAY FACES' FROM A PICTURE, STUDY CLAIMS." According to its authors, the accuracy of their AI system was accurate 91% of the time predicting if a man was gay, and 83% for gay women. Damn! That's pretty good! The study also concluded that homosexuals tend to have “gender-atypical facial morphology, expression, and grooming styles.” Again, stereotypes exist for a reason, see below.

Then I found this, "Looking for tiny facial tics from opponents has been used by poker players for decades as a way to spot a bluff, but now Chinese scientists are using the same technique to develop a lie detector." Apparently it is an app, and was developed by researchers at the Chongqing Institute of Green and Intelligent Technology at the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the Shanghai Jiao Tong University, and a company called Cloudwalk. Sadly, the article does not state how accurate the app is. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/article-3395651/The-robot-knows-lying-Polygraph-powered-artificial-intelligence-studies-face-voice-subtle-signs-deceitful.html

Now, if you are triggered by all of this talk about judging people so superficially, then that is fine, I understand. However, it is human nature to do so even if you yourself do not realize it. In other words, EVERYONE DOES IT. Yes, even you smug progressives; you do it too. Now, you may be afraid of how you are going to be judged by others. Well, there is really no avoiding it, and nothing much you can do about it, but here is some advice.

There is one more thing I am curious about. Forget for a moment the incredibly idiotic things coming out of Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez's stupid mouth, and just listen to the pitch of her voice. Is it me, or do some people just sound imbecilic merely from how high or deep their voice sounds? I know, I know, how dare I, but I think I am on to something here. Perhaps I will do some research, and explore this for the next blog.
