Why Do Male Lions Have Manes?

in science •  7 years ago

Many of the qualities earned the lion the title of king of the jungle, perhaps one of those reasons - the formality! -having Manes gives him prestige and power.

Perhaps the most remarkable thing is that the female lion, the lioness, lacks the presence of this mane ! This made some biologists such as Charles Darwin assume that the importance of mane for the male is the formation of a thick layer of protection around his neck to protect him during fierce attacks from other animals.

However, this assumption was proved wrong after observing that lionesses while fighting each other do not target that area and rarely attack it.

Then what is its significance and purpose of manes ?

Of course, The fur around the neck of the lion doesn't cool of his face and neck area, as some believe because of the nature of the warm area in which he lives. In addition, Manes is a dwelling for various types of parasites! Then What makes it distinctive to the lion?

Simply, Mane does not have a protective factor or so, It is simply a magnet for females ! Just as the female peacock attracts a beautiful colored breech, the lion also attracts females to mingle and form a family through its Mane.

According to a study by researchers at the University of Minnesota, The denser the fur is, the more attractive the lion is, and the more he is ready for paternity!
