Let me build on top of @cryptogee's post explaining why our universe really might be a virtual simulation.
The universe is a computer simulation
Also read this post's Part 2 and Part 3. Part 4 coming soon.
Take that for granted through this post. Just assume this is the absolute truth. It's our starting point. Okay, carry on. Think of The Sims, a game in which we influence a family to develop according to our will while catering to their needs. Or something more recent, like Virtual Reality chat apps to dive in and just hang out.
Most of our games put humans as the protagonists or keystones of the enviroment. From first person shooters and rpgs to sandboxes and simulators, almost everything has humans in it. Likewise, the creator of our simulated universe is human. We are NPCs to them like the villagers walking around in any MMORPG are NPCs to us.
Our grand design
Combine an extremely technologically advanced form of the two ideas and you get a playable universe simulator. Something you can login to play god by enabling cheats or just features player characters that can walk on water or turn water into wine.
Our creator would have named himself Jesus Christ, fooled around a bit on our planet, then logged off, leaving the computer on without closing our executable. Maybe there's no pause feature. Either that or we're an idle game, so when Jesus'es computer is turned on again, time flow is calculated retroactively.
Unless we're not entertainment. "What if that thing happened instead during this event of our history?" This question started our project, which functions as a hypothetical but historical scenario simulator, much like Europa Universalis.
Extra puzzle pieces
The paranormal and supernatural are then explained by someone clicking near us (or whatever they use) and invoking some kind of interaction we don't quite understand. Again, Maxis players will easily understand this. Who hasn't loaded up Sim City only to randomly summon multiple tornadoes on a chaotic win!
Just remember: even if we are all NPC's, there's always that one random encounter that hits the player so hard, he gets the game over screen. Let us be this.

Thank you for reading!
There is a Part II and Part III now available if you have a bit more time.
I like how you think mate, you got an Upvote. I had already think something similar but with the exception that I thought the world as like minecraft. lets suppose you are steve and the world around you is forming while you are walking, talking or anything you do as in minecraft, like in minecraft world, the memory of our world is limited, so to get the best and more efficient use of this memory, the cosmic entity, or let say the universe, or whatever you want to believe doesn't have the necessity of build the whole world at once, but while the avatar is moving and interacting with it, is also making it. I like to think this as the Schrodinger's cat, until the box gets open you cannot know what is happening within the box, now whatever you are, is your reality and beyond where your eyes cannot see don't exist. So enjoy the moment because nothing else exists until you see it.

I agree with an online multiplayer, npc-populated version of your idea where we are the NPCs instead of the avatars.

this is how tech guys describe the second coming of Jesus Christ.
Question: How about those who thing we are a product of a cosmic accident, what analogy best explains their standpoint

I'm not quite sure what the point of this post is, but the bit about Jesus "logging off" wouldn't exactly sit well with classic theology. Since the Bible says he ascended into heaven to sit at the right hand of the Father and that he makes intercession for the saints right now, it would appear that this analogy would better be illustrated by saying he left his computer logged on but controls it from another device connected to the cloud.

In that case he would be a different user. Like a community director, a moderator, a fellow researcher, player one following a backstory or even just player two.
On the other hand, he might be part of a director AI meant to guide our developments or some predefined NPC from a triggered world event unlocked in a NewGame+ round.
EDIT: Oh and the point of this post is to elaborate on this post explaining how our universe really might be a simulation by @cryptogee.

Sorry for taking so long to reply, I've had this on my mind for the past few days...
I like this theory and it is one that I've often pondered myself, that if we are in a sim, is it an alien sim or an advanced human one?
Let's go with it and say that it is indeed an advanced human one, if that is the case then the purpose of this sim/game would be impossible to know.
One theory I like is that it is part of a modelling experience to see how we behave in certain scenarios. Also maybe we have lived this life countless of other times. Kind of like the robots in Westworld, but with zero memories of our past lives.
Maybe so, however we would not be aware even if there was. Let's say that the 'player' pauses us for 10 subjective minutes. How would we know? To us the moment between pause and un-pause would be seamless.
Like pausing a game when the character is in mid air, and then un-pausing a few minutes later. To that character it has just been one continuous jump.
Maybe we are just preparing to upload the entire human race onto this computer and we are just checking its viability first :-)

I just hope our ability to be self-aware in this regard doesn't get patched away. I'll write about this now.
