Designing DEATH - Euthanasia & Euphoria for MASS MURDER

in science •  8 years ago  (edited)

If you are unfamiliar with the morbid purpose of Julijonas Urbonas' Euthanasia Coaster, you should watch this short presentation which details this device's devilish purpose.

It is essentially a death machine. Designed to effectively kill numerous people in a very humane fashion. Described on his website as a hypothetic death machine in the form of a roller coaster, engineered to humanely – with elegance and euphoria – take the life of a human being.

Julijonas Urbonas was an engineer and Ph.D. candidate at the time and he conceived this idea as a unique method of mass murder. It was designed to kill using extreme height. The rider will experience a series of intensive motion elements which will induce various unique experiences: from euphoria to tunnel vision, loss of consciousness and eventually death.

It would appear the the ride upwards to the apex would take roughly 120 seconds at which point the initial downward decent would be 10 seconds. Falling at a speed close to the terminal velocity you then enter the first of a series of continuous loops. As Urbonas describes:

Breathing requires more effort, as the ribs and the rest of the internal organs are pulled down, which empties air from the lungs. But most probably you are already unconscious, as this force rushes the blood to the lower extremities of the body, thereby causing oxygen deficiency in the brain. It is exactly this cerebral suffocation, also known as cerebral hypoxia, that is going to kill you.

Considering that such a device can be easily constructed and the once taboo subject surrounding population expansion becomes increasingly familiar in our public discourse, exacerbated by global poverty, conflict, resource exploitation and disease ......how soon could we start to see such macabre manifestations in our conflict and violent prone civilization?

In addition, knowing how the principles of groupthink and mass idiocy function, we could see many voluntarily try this for entertainments value........there might possibly be a new reality series with full Network support - once society is sufficiently socially engineering to support mass euthanasia. Budweiser and the latest Apple products would be heavily advertised, paying top dollar, if fiat still exists for a 30 second clip of airtime.

That's morbidly interesting, in some strange way.

I think death in general provokes a kind of grim fascination from everyone. Sort of like how those Faces of Death series became and underground cult classic.

Very good point. Those videos were something you just couldn't pull your eyes away from.

I think as a species our mortality is always something we will be fascinated with, not too mention the question of "how" which has some rather morbid connotations.

Sounds terrifying! Not my idea of euphoria that's for sure.

Agreed. I think just the idea that this was conceived and is plausible and would work technically is what makes this so disturbing.

Interesting!

I wonder what made him want to invent such a thing!

I would wager to guess he had read a ton on over population studies and as a PhD student it just made sense, not too mention the notoriety probably gave him some much needed attention for his future grants.

Very interesting. The FAQ was revealing and comical in a morbid sense. I can only imagine if our species had this kind of stoic rationale regarding the Anthropocene and our role in species extinction - would or could we ever get to this point regarding our collective mortality.......

Speaking about geology... I think the purpose of our species on this planet is to restore carbon content in the atmosphere, because plants need it and icing is not very good for life either :))

Lol. Indeed, I would like more academics to have this kind of approach and reasoning. Anthropocene scholars tend to debate origins while somewhat ignoring the perils beyond fear mongering. Then again, we are food for worms as they say.......
