INTRODUCTION:
- Continued during the retaining walls (part N ° 01) or we start with definitions and generalities on retaining walls and its roles and other techniques used for slope stability for small and medium heights .
MAIN PARTS OF A RETAINING WALL:
Fig N ° 01: Image drawn by myself from a reinforced concrete retaining wall.
As shown in the image above, a retaining wall must consist of two essential components, namely the yellow component (the sole) and the gray component (the veil) and sometimes have to add a spade presented in red in the drawing as well as the buttress (the element in blue).
As the main role of a retaining wall is to ensure the stability of the land these components are dimensioned in a way seen the thrusts of the lands applied on the veil the latter which must be stabilized by the sole is sometimes the sole will be reinforced by a spade to add a stabilizing force.
*Le contrefort est en générale ajouté au voile pour les hauteurs importantes des voiles pour joué le rôle de renforcement contre le moment important du au poussées de la charge sur la surface des terres ainsi que le poids des terres cumulés.
WEIGHT WALLS:
- A second category of retaining walls is used for ranges of slopes of 0-4 meters Weight walls or a weight made of masonry, it ensures the stability of the slopes directly by balancing using its weight.
