Meteoroids, Meteors, and Meteorites.

in science •  7 years ago

Earth is often "invaded" by objects from space. Most of these invaders are meteoroids, chunks of metal or stone that orbit the sun. Scientists think that most meteoroids come from the asteroid belt or from comets that hace broken up. Each day millions of meteoroids plunge through earth´s atmosphere. When the Meteoroid rubs against the gases in the atmosphere, friction causes it to burn. The streak of light produced by a burning meteoroid is called a meteor. Meteors are also known as shooting stars.

Most meteors burn up in the atmosphere. A few, however, survive to strike earth´s surface. A meteor that strike earth´s surface is called a meteorite. Meteorites vary in composition, but most contain iron, nickel, and stone.

While most meteorites are small, a few are quite large. The largest meteorite ever found is the Hoba West meteorite in south west africa. It has a mass of more than 18,000 kilograms.
