You Want To Lose Weight? Stop Eating Breakfast!

Breakfast has been one of the pillars of healthy eating for at least half a century. But for thousands of years people didn’t start their day by eating. Research shows that breakfast isn’t helping people lose weight.

Our faith in the miraculous effects of breakfast could be shaken by a new study by an Australian team lead by Flavia Cucuttini from the Monash University in Melbourne that was recently published by the British Medical Journal (BMJ).

They put together results of studies that looked into the effects of not eating breakfast on body weight and the daily energy intake. The data shows that not eating breakfast doesn’t lead to gaining weight at all. And not only they didn’t confirm the common knowledge that a breakfast is the key to losing weight it actually shows that if you don’t eat breakfast you could get rid of the weight you don’t want to have.

Dietitians tells us that we need a steady intake of food even though one of the common parts of our ancestors life was fasting for a long time compensated by eating a lot, for example after a successful hunt. And our organisms are still well adapted to such swings in food intake. New studies show that short periods of fasting are beneficial to our intestinal bacteria and through them to ourselves. You have to remember, humans have evolved under conditions that weren’t really good for eating breakfast.

Nowadays many dietitians think that a large amount of smaller food will keep us running well through the day. They also think that if we eat in the afternoon and in the evening we will only start having health issues because that is the time when glucose levels are highest and our metabolism is the slowest.

But previous research was done on lab rats and there were a few short-term studies with volunteers. The reason why scientists thought not eating breakfast was detrimental came also from studies that showed that people who don’t eat a certain meal of the day tend to be fatter. But these were usually performed on people who were obese. Obese people often try to diet but also break their diets. Then they feel ashamed and tend to not eat some meals to compensate. But the reason why they were overweight wasn’t not eating a meal but an unhealthy diet or lack of physical activity in general.

The fact that companies that make food for us quickly jumped on the bandwagon because it allows them to sell us more food only made this fake news more prominent. But if you truly want to lose weight, consider not eating breakfast.
