Magnificent GREEN Malachite!!

Tumbled & polished Malachite.

One of the most beautiful of stones, is Malachite! It has been used by many cultures over thousands of years in jewelry, sculpture, and as pigmentation in paint. (per geology.com)

When I first started dabbling with making jewelry, real malachite was hard to find, and what I did find was pretty pricey. But the demand for it has grown, and that has brought about an increase in availability. Ohhh joy!!!!😁

I now possess not only genuine malachite beads, but polished stones and even small fibrous samples which, I find, to be the greenest of green Malachite. I would say it's my favorite form of it, but then I look at the polished forms I have of it and become indecisive! lol I'm not complaining!!

Per geology.com:

malachite is a green copper carbonate hydroxide mineral with a chemical composition of Cu2(CO3)(OH)2. It was one of the first ores used to produce copper metal. It is of minor importance today as an ore of copper because it is usually found in small quantities and can be sold for higher prices for other types of use.

I very recently obtained some fibrous Malachite which I used to create some jewelry for a family member. I can't wait to surprise them with it!

Necklace & earrings made by me.

I found the fibrous Malachite to be a bit more challenging to work with then beads or tumbled stone. This is most likely is because malachite is a very soft stone. I don't know if tumbling and polishing hardens it further and couldn't find any information on this.

However, according to sciencing.com:

Malachite can be very challenging to tumble and polish and special oxide polishes should be used and even better is fine diamond grit. Never polish your malachite dry. The dust is toxic and can make you violently ill if you inhale it. This is due to the high copper content in Malachite.

Look how green it is!

According to geology.com:

Some of the first malachite deposits to be exploited were located in Egypt and Israel. Over 4000 years ago, they were mined and used to produce copper. Material from these deposits was also used to produce gemstones, sculptures, and pigments.

Hmmmm. Wonder if I could quantify that my jewelry making follows in the footsteps of the Egyptians? Well it most certainly is a nice thought!!

Geology.com writes:

malachite often forms within limestone where a subsurface chemical environment favorable for the formation of carbonate minerals can occur. Associated minerals include azurite, bornite, calcite, chalcopyrite, copper, cuprite, and a variety of iron oxides.

With it's brilliant green shades of color, and it's continued growth in popularity, I look forward to discovering new ways I can put Malachite to use in my jewelry making as well as more about this beautiful stone as well!

I luff malachite. But since you put this under the science tag, I feel compelled to inform you that floating around the intertubes is a lengthy discourse from the science side of Tumblr about whether malachite can safely be used as a dildo. They were getting into the ph balance of vaginas and anuses. Because internet. 😂😂
Tl;dr: no, it can't.
#NowYouCantUnreadThat

Interesting!! They are now making, as well as being in high demand, both penises and vaginas out of various quartzes, Jasper's, etc. Everything from pocket sized "pedros" to realistic size. I haven't seen vaginas that were useable for men, unless they're "major pencils", but I have come across convos bout the life size penises for "play", etc. (I personally can't imagine using something so hard-ouch!!!!!) But as far as one carved with malachite I'm gonna go with noooooo. Lol. Poisoning by vagina is not how I'd want to go! I didn't even know this about malachite and did more research over the concerns I have with the jewelry I made as a gift from the raw, but I'm not too concerned. They won't be wearing it everyday, I'm sure. God is it a pretty stone though! I also will not be breaking up the tumbles as I once had considered doing!! 😉

I have a little slab of malachite that is so pretty. Energetically nice, too. Heart chakra stone FTW!

Yes!! It's a very pleasant stone to hold too! I don't know if all the talk about the healing powers of stones just have me more aware or what but I sure do feel it with malachite!

This post was informative and intriguing but with these comments it reached next level! :D
Too bad it's too poisonous for being used as a dildo material. Green is my favorite color, this stone is gorgeous and you know, who wouldn't want their toy so nice looking it could be placed up on a shelf instead of hiding it in a drawer.
But besides taking part in this penis-vagina-conversation, I would like to compliment your content as well: this was interesting enough to read although it was informative and included scientific facts -pragmatic I would say! And those jewelry peaces look beautiful, who ever family member gets them, must be delighted. :)

Well thank you sooooo much!! 😍. I'm not a science-type person, but much more the creative type! However a little info on these stones is very interesting!! It's going to my older sister who I'm very close to. I can't wait to give it to her!!

Creative for sure, I can tell that by looking at your work. :)

Ty!😊

Here's on of my chunks of malachite @Luanne 😊
I love the stone it's very enchanting

Nice!!! Nice piece!! The stuff is just beautiful!!

I agree, I once had the most exquisite malachite necklace too 😊
I love anything green. Do you like Moldavite ?

I am not familiar (yet) with that stone! I don't think there was any in the rock shop I was in last week either. I'll have to check it out!

As usual you've inspired me to write a blog about it @luanne I'm quite passionate about crystals and will take a few photos tomorow add it to the article and publish it then😊
Wishing you smiles 😊

Cool!! Look forward to it!!

Heres my article @luanne 😊
Bless you once again for inspiring me to write this post let me know what you think of it 😊
