Antibiotic resistance , the phenomenon in which bacteria stop responding to certain antibiotics , is a growing health threat worldwide. It is expected to kill about 10 million people by 2050. The problem is so serious that large pharmaceutical companies have stopped developing new antibiotics, and some even turn to a completely different kind of therapies . The treatment consists of viruses that kill bacteria are called bacteriophages or phages for short. They were discovered in 1900 and really can cure bacterial infections in many people.
"They have great potential, which is usually no antibiotics," explains kolonistat for The New York Times, Karl Tsimer. "I think is should focus our efforts on approval of medical procedures to open niche for the development of bacteriophage treatment of bacterial infections," he added.
