Mineral Thin Sections

in science •  7 years ago

When trying to identify minerals in a rock sample, one of the best methods is by examining a tiny slice of the sample under a special polarizing microscope. These slices are thinner than a hair, and the polarizing microscope alters the colors in ways that allow geologists to better identify the mineral grains. Here are a few photos I've taken in my mineralogy class of thin sections.
