The monster wave of 23 meters, highest recorded in Southern Hemisphere.
On a stormy night in early May, 23.8 meters high waves were measured in the Antarctic Ocean.
Tom Durrant at MetOcean Solutions said: " This is a very exciting event and it is the largest wave recorded in the Southern Hemisphere as far as we know ".
It is a Metocean buoy which operates with sunlight, observes these wave conditions such as wave height, period, direction etc. for about 20 minutes every 3 hours and transmits the measured data to the satellite.
According to the meaningful wave height used by oceanographers to measure the condition of the sea. The method of taking the average of the upper one third from the observed waves.
This wave was generated by the low pressure which came from the east where the wind of 65 knots (120 km / h) blows. These storms occur only in winter in the Northern Hemisphere, whereas storms due to such low atmospheric pressure occur all year in the Antarctic Ocean.
The Antarctic Ocean is like an engine room. The powerful wind blowing constantly creates waves that cross the earth. Some can reach the coast of California and are pleasing surfers. However, the Antarctic Ocean is one of the least studied areas on Earth.
Mr. Durrant said that this data is important for deepening physics understanding of waves under abnormal conditions in the Southern Hemisphere.
