Mistakes of a Paranormal Researcher.

in science •  7 years ago

Mistakes when doing Paranormal Research is one of the most frustrating things that can possibly happen. You believe that you have a solid theory only to receive statistics that completely contradict what you believe to be true. Then comes that task of having to go back through your theory while going through your statistics to find out when and where you went wrong.

This happened to me after so many years of researching the Electronic Voice Phenomenon. The professor who worked with us prior to his passing in 2014, Dr. John Foldy, told me that one of the best things about being a researcher is that "you are allowed to be wrong", but at the same time you have to own up to your mistakes and then determine how to proceed in your research. Wise words from a wise man.

I made plenty of mistakes while doing my own research into EVP's:

  • I did not take physics into account.
  • I considered flawed paranormal theories that are currently used in the field when developing my theories.
  • I failed to see the "signs" from the very beginning.
  • I was stubborn.
  • I listened to everyone else and failed to verify their claims of how this phenomenon occurs due to fears of backlash from the Paranormal Field.

(Update: I don't care about the backlash anymore. I CARE ONLY ABOUT THE TRUTH!!!)

I caught my first EVP by the Mohawk River near the condemned bridge in the Schenectady Stockade in New York State that leads to the Scotia-Glenville area. The response I received that evening was from a male entity that said "get me...ooooouuut". I was super excited about this while getting goosebumps from the creepy response I had just received.

At the time I was just a teenager and had just started my first paranormal team called the "T.P.O. Squad". The initials stood for "The Paranormal Officer Squad". Several years into the teams life I realized what a dumb name that was. I literally had "the" in the name which means we technically have to introduce ourselves as the The Paranormal Officer Squad. Truly embarrassing!

When I decided to focus on more of the science behind the paranormal which would require more paperwork, most of the team members decided that they did not want to be part of this due to the amount of work that it would require. They wanted to just do something more fun. The team then disbanded and a new team would form called the Paranormal Security Department. This happened soon after the passing of my great grandfather and I now wanted to find a way to contact him using science. At this point I was in my early 20's.

The Paranormal Security Department would last approximately 5 years prior to almost completely disbanding in mid-2011 which is when Uini Research would be formed by the remaining members. During those 5 years I started noticing a pattern with ghosts. Apparitions formed in areas that contained larger sources of water. At the time though, I took the Paranormal Fields theory into account about EVP's being EMF so the theory I developed off of all of this information was this:

"Ghosts are made out of water molecules and will likely manifest near sources containing water. EVP's are made out EMF and will likely occur more frequently by a power source such as a power outlet."

The problem with the above theory was that my first EVP contradicted this, but I did not take the first EVP into account. The first EVP which was clear as day occurred during the evening around where there were no power sources and contained a large body of water that I was literally standing next too.

I would finally consider that my theory was wrong when I kept on noticing that EVP's that were coming out clear were not occurring near power sources, but occurred at night in environments that contained more humidity, large bodies of water (i.e. a pool) and was a more wide open space where echoes could easily be generated.

I sat back and just couldn't believe after all of these years (now almost 8 years of running paranormal teams) I find that I have been wrong this whole time and my FIRST EVP gave me the hint. This would be the mistake that would change my approach to the paranormal field and would begin the process of developing our approach that we use in Uini Research called the "Paranormal Puzzle Approach".

In my next article which will be titled "Path to Communication", you will be able to read about the more emotional and in-depth story about my paranormal experiences with my great grandparents after both of them had passed which resulted in the direction that I would take with my research. I would not make the same mistake I made in this story twice! It's not always about the mistakes we make, but how we bounce back from them and become better than yesterdays version of ourselves.

Interesting post! I like to read about paranormal stuff

Appreciate it. Thank you! Plenty more paranormal goodness coming soon! ;-)

Nice :)

I enjoyed reading your scientific approach to paranormal investigation. I dabble in the use of scientific instruments and tools to explore the paranormal myself.

My education with the paranormal is in parapsychology and psychic sensitivity (neither of which have a good scientific foundation) but I will often work with scientific groups when exploring reported activity.

Thank you so much for your input. I put a lot of heart into the articles. That's awesome that you do that type of work! Dr. John Foldy was very big on looking into psychic activity which took me by surprise. He loved to study that and would look for me to put him in contact with people who were "sensitives" in the field. I wish he were still around, because I am sure he would've wanted to talk to you about your studies as well. He was truly an open-minded person.

Amazing!
