in 1879, precisely dated 27 February 1879, a chemist born in Russia called constantin fahlberg announced the findings of artificial sweeteners. the discovery of this artificial sweetener was actually discovered accidentally by fahlberg when he was analyzing a chemical compound in a coal tar at aboratarium ira remsen, professor of chemistry at john hopkins university in baltimore, maryland, united states.

the story of this discovery begins when fahlberg breaks for dinner. when eating bread accidentally fahlberg tasted an unusual sweet taste. fahlberg then traces his origins and finds that the sweetness comes from the chemical compounds he touches while working in the laboratory.

fahlberg then patented his findings and with his uncle, dr. adolf list, setting up a factory to produce saccharin. Such artificial sweeteners are free of calories and sweeter than sucrose. only in high concentration has a bitter taste or metal. saccharin is widely used for sweeteners drinks, sweets, cakes and drugs.
