The Mariana Trench is located in the Western Pacific Ocean and east of the Philippines an average of 200 kilometers east of the Mariana Islands (11"21' North Latitude and 142" 12' East Longitude) near Japan. The Mariana Trench is a crescent-shaped scar in the Earth's crust that measures more than 2,550 kilometers long and 69 kilometers wide on the average. The Mariana Trench is part of the global network of deep troughs that cut across the ocean floor and formed when two tectonic plates collide. At the point of collision or subduction, a plate topped by ocean crust dives into the Earth's mantle and ocean Trench is created.

The deepest part of the Mariana Trench is called the Challenger Deep which is named after the exploratory vessel HMS CHALLENGER II. The two and only humans that descended into the challenger Deep were Jacques Piccard and Navy Lieutenant Don Walsh.

Assuming the highest mountain, MT Everest were dropped in the Challenger Deep, it's peak will still be more than 1.6 miles underwater.
The maximum known depth of the Challenger Deep is 10,994 meters (36,070 ft).
At the bottom of the trench, the water column exerts a pressure of 1086 bars more than 1000 times the standard atmospheric pressure at Sea level.
