Did You Know That Saturn's Rings Make A Super Creepy Sound?

in science •  7 years ago

Apparently the NASA Voyager recorded a very eerie sound which seemed to emanate from the rings of Saturn.

This was brought to my attention by @road2wisdom in a previous post about Buzz Aldrin:

What the heck is this sound??

Now you tell me if that doesn't sound an awful lot like this:

What's the source?

What do you think is making the sounds coming from Saturn's rings?

Is there some natural phenomenon to explain this? Is it all made up?

What do you think?

There is no sound in space

Well, yes -- that's what I'd always been told. So what is the sound?

It's actually the sound of the radio waves emitted from radiation. NYT has a pretty good write up on the matter. https://mobile.nytimes.com/2017/05/03/science/nasa-cassini-sound-recording-saturn.html

Sound is energy passing through a medium ( air, water, etc.) Because there is no medium in space , only vacuum, sound can't travel. But there are plenty of other energies running through space, so it's no surprise the rings emmit waves.

Or is there? Looks like a case of if a tree falls in a forest and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound?

Sound doesn't travel in a vacuum, and space is a vacuum.

That's correct, and rockets cannot propel in a space/vacuum, either. But I digress.

Some form of magnetic property of the rings + the planet's creating a low-frequency electromagnetic feedback which can be picked up as like radio waves OORRR the asteroids all vibrate as they orbit, kinda like the moon's wobble OOORRR

Yes. Aliens. Of course.

I have to admit that is creepy! Gives me the chills. I'm glad Saturn is a long ass way away from us.

I actually caught myself listening to it in a meditative state. It was actually quite soothing :D

WOOOOOO Amazing! But how there should be sound without oxygen?

It's kind of obvious to me. Saturn is turntable of the Gods. It's some dope beats! We just can't comprehend coz it's the Universe's BPM. Boom!!

That sounds right.

it's so beautiful
