Before I tell you something about orangutans, please read this Important Announcement!

@steemstem , the community account of the steemSTEM team, is looking for new SP delegations! Our motivated team of curators spends hours upon hours every day to reward science authors on Steemit. If you want to support the initiative, a delegation would be a great help!

Okay, now to the orangutans.

Recently, I’ve been talking to the owner of a vegan restaurant/shop who proudly presented me with his “cheese” alternative. It didn’t taste too bad so I asked what’s inside.

”Oh! It’s just coconut oil and palm oil! Very pure, nothing else in there.”

I felt like screaming at him. Palm oil? How can someone who claims to respect and protect animals use palm oil? Are orangutans less worthy of our protection than cows?

I told the story in the chat yesterday and @geekpowered pointed out that people mostly don’t know the connection between palm oil and orangutans. Sometimes, we assume everyone knows about certain problems and forget that not everyone can be aware of everything all the time.

So what is the problem with palm oil?

Palm Oil

Palm oil can be found in many products, often labeled as “vegetable oil”. Lipsticks, instant noodles, shampoos, ice cream, margarine, chocolate, cookies, the list goes on. It’s obviously a lucrative business!

About 85% of the world’s palm oil comes from Indonesia and Malaysia. For Indonesia alone, palm oil is the export product with the biggest profit. It’s not really surprising, that oil palms are being planted a lot. But that’s exactly the problem. @suesa

Big parts of rainforests are destroyed to make room for the palms. That’s often done by illegally burning it all to the ground. Swamps are being drained to make room too. Between 1990 and 2013, the swamp forest in Tripa was reduced from 60,000 hectares to 10,000!

All this destroys the home of the orangutans who live in the forests of Borneo and Sumatra. I roughly marked the areas where they can be found on the map below.

map.jpg

With their homes cut down, burned and replaced with oil palms, the orangutans just starve to death. They’re restricted to small patches of forest which can’t feed all of them. The hunger often forces them onto the plantation where they look for food - and are killed brutally by plantation workers.

Of course, that’s illegal. Just as it’s illegal to just burn down the forest. In 2012 there has been a lawsuit against the palm oil firm P.T. Kallista Alam by the Indonesian government for burning down 1,000 hectares! They were sentenced and … nothing happened aside from the company filing a lawsuit back. Don’t we all love companies like that?

Judging Orangutan

It’s also illegal to traffic orangutans and sell them as pets. But the people doing that don’t care. Mothers who wander onto the plantations together with their young are captured and killed so the young can be sold off. Orangutan mothers are very, very attached to their babies. Just imagine the emotional trauma, the pain.

So what can you do? After all, palm oil is seemingly everywhere.

There are companies who try to “ethically” farm palm oil and to not add to the deforestation. How closely they follow that guideline is questionable, but it’s a start.

You can generally try to only buy products with palm oil from verified sources or just cut out palm oil out of your life as far as possible. It’s not guaranteed that this will be enough. Maybe orangutans will be gone in a few years or decades. Maybe it’s too late.

But we can at least try.

Hello @suesa

Thank you so much for shedding light on this very valid point. I have never been aware of the connection between oragutans and palm oil. It's so sad and alarming. I'll be paying more attention to the products i buy from now on.
Thanks for sharing !

@melanie00

Browsing your posts and just stumbled on this one - thank you for covering this topic too @suesa. This is another issue I wrote about (here https://list25.com/25-shocking-and-sad-facts-about-palm-oil/) and I am really happy for any article that informs about the tragic consenquences of the entire palm oil industry. I noticed you dont write about conservation only but I just clicked on "follow" not to miss anything on this topic from you ;) Greetings from another nature lover. Keep up the good and praiseworthy work.

I'm writing about a vast area of topics. Maybe you'll enjoy those not about conservation too :)

Thank you for your answer @suesa. I am sure I will :) Can I have a question? Have you built such a high-profile account and fans base by writing this original, top-quality content only or have you used any additional, supportive functions? I am asking because I am still a newbie here and I joined the network thinking I would just write about topics I am interested in but it feels like you first need to gather some readers through these special features and that is something I dont want to do. So it would be very inspirational and encouraging to hear that it is possible to succeed here by creating great articles only :) Thank you.

I networked a lot by talking to people on steemit.chat. Making friends and producing good content is certainly beneficial.

Ok, thank you for your feedback :) Using Steemit chat to make some new friends and followers sounds definitely better than using bots and all these special "services". I will check it out. Have a great day :)

Great post!

You're right. Those that know of the problem can get frustrated that people don't understand it.

I wandered the supermarkets in despair a few Christmases ago. Mince pies, Christmas puddings and a host of other goodies All use palm oil. I spoke to the shop staff who just shrugged their shoulders. The manager didn't want to know either.

I put down the goodies and walked out, refusing to purchase the items in my basket.

I look at the ingredients of everything I buy now.

I made my own mincemeat and Christmas pudding that year and that's how it's going to be from now.

Us gingers have to watch out for each other.

To quote Terry Pratchett's most famous Ginger...

"Ook!"

The Librarian would greatly approve of your avoidance of palm oil!

Do you like nuttella?

Yeah, I know :/ not buying Nutella usually, although I'm sometimes gifted a glass and really love it

  ·  7 years ago (edited)

great to know that they done something with it after 50 years :D anyway there are healthier oils afaik

True, but at least I can enjoy nutella again without feeling i'm actively helping to kill orangutans!

I was talking to a guy on here yesterday who is from Borneo. I didn't know about the orangutan issue until I searched Borneo and it is truly awful what is happening there. I don't understand why more isn't said about it. Hats off to you for pointing this out. I didn't know about the Palm oil issue, I will be looking more closely at the things I buy from now on.

hi @beautifulbullies haa, the world is round and here we are again.. sometimes its called the real fact is not pictured well if we didn't see it ourself. This fact is not hard to be twisted into a negative image or the other way. Thats why its need more exposure and see how real it is..have a nice day...

Hi @dylen! :) Speak and he shall appear! lol How does your country view this issue?

  ·  7 years ago (edited)

I did a post about it.... here in steemit I'm all about the orangutan

That's really sad. And I actually didn't know about palm oil and orangutans. I stick to making my own products for personal care and all, as much as I can, anyways. But definitely will be more aware of palm oil from now on...

Hi! Ty for the mention!! And honestly..I also had no idea bout palm oil. Makes me interested how much of it do we have in the store products. I'm not so worried bout home food....since I just use olive oil for mostly everything. I'm in luck and a friend makes it.

My pleasure, you are great after all! And I'm jealous because of the olive oil, it sound great :O

Yeah I wont lie...I love it. He also makes it a bit "thicker" for me since i perfer it that way. Sometimes I use it for my skin....I know some people say oils are actually drying the skin (maybe u can confirm this myth to me). Anyway this oil doesn't. Makes my skin really smooth after.

Uhm I guess it depends on the oil, your skin and other factors xD if it works for you it's great :)

Look for the RSPO label to ensure you purchase products made with certified sustainable palm oil. This label gives you the confidence that the palm oil was produced in a socially and environmentally responsible way.
[]

There are other companies also doing the same type of certification. But everyone should do their own research on every single thing they put in/on their bodies, and even more for their children who can't do this on their own.

What I regret most about being born a human is that we are selfish beings. I tend to think that we are not so good at sharing space with the wild. That we do our best to ruin nature. Why cant we just leave the wild alone?

I didn't about palm oil and but I believe that those oranges beings are just awesome to stare at! :)

Good articles.. I wish you can come to Borneo and witness by yourself to see what are the real deal and what are the actual things happened. I do agreed that their population are going down. Killing those lovely 'orang utan' its against the law and they are protected creature in Sabah and Sarawak Borneo. But I don't really know what happen to orang utan in other part of Borneo land in Indonesia I don't think they would like to see them got killed too. In Sarawak and Sabah they are placed in a typical special place just for orang utan. haa and orang utan mean jungle people why they called as orang utan or aka jungle people because they behave like human.. but hairy haha Thanks for your awareness I'm sure more of us do care about orang utan . The worst phenomena in here is not about the orang utan only but this matter are also effected the people of Borneo
land slide, flood, chemical released from the oil palm production, the chemical toxic waste channeled out to the open sea through rivers and those are the most important matter to consider how it would affect people health...well that just a glance..Thanks

As long as the continuous accumulation of capital, this problem will increase globally not just against orangutans but against animals as well. The world prevails an ideologically, which throw the responsibility for everything on individuals.

For example, in this sense, when the environmental issues such as the issue of climate change is raised, concerned organizations and governments warn people to use certain products because they harm the ozone network, urge them to commit to recycling, not to use energy and cars "excessively", etc. Of course, companies use this culture to market their "eco-friendly" products to make people feel that they are saving the environment by choosing this particular product, even if it is more expensive.

On the other hand, at the country level, China & the United States and other countries with the highest CO2 emissions share a modest (non-binding) agreement to limit emissions from 2% and to market it as a great achievement and a major step towards saving humanity.

The reality is that this "existential danger" has hit hundreds of millions of people, especially the poor living in agriculture, and that this individualistic culture drives ordinary people to become "friends of the environment", concealing a structural problem, the problem of the continuous accumulation of capital. It is all about money making!

Great Post Suesa. have requested more info on delegation in the steemstem chat channel.

Thanks!

Quite a catchy headline you have got yourself. A good way to surreptitiously show one of the negative effects of deforestation on biodiversity. However, it should be known that orangutans are not the only endangered species through the hammer of deforestation. other innumerable species of plants and animals are lost as well.

Absolutely agree!

Great minds think alike! Enjoyed your post :)

Apparently :P

Hopefully you enjoyed mine just as much :D

These kind of issues make me confused and depressed. The orangutan is definitely worth keeping (not just existing, but living) safe but there is also becoming a huge demand for things like chocolate and coffee that is organically grown. Organic foods require a lot more space in order to produce enough perfect product that the buyers will accept. Food that is not organic poisons the ground and animals. Which are you willing to choose? If you give up products grown in sensitive areas then the people who depend on the farming business to feed their families suffer. Who is willing to give up coffee, chocolate, and vanilla? It's a very complex issue.

those companies who care for enviroment, are just those who invested in buying such status. there is no way to tell how they do it. ive personally been involved in buying status of eco friendly company for leather factory. its expensive, even for low level. also, when they are willing to buy such status, it means they are doing something very wrong, and they need some first aid shield in case of accidents.

also, as you said, palm oil is biggest export for these countries. it means their economy depends on it big time. their schools, hospitals and such.

ok im sorry for orangutans, but this seems like, we in europe got rid of our nature, animals and clear water because of progress. Americans did pretty same, if not worse (they were so progressive, almost got rid even of humans^) for the sake of progress.

but when Brazil wipes out their rainforest to create jobs, and employ its people, its attack on lungs of the world. When Indonesia does it, its cruel and non human.

It seems like, we will live in our developed progressive countries we cleansed of everything, but they need to live in primitive ZOO-s and safari parks, because only we have the right to destroy planet for progress?

just sounds like that.

Great explanation! Thanks for your sharing ;)

Creative piece of work. Though i am sure deforestation is not just about orangutans and palm oil. Having said that, seeing Malaysia at the top of world's palm oil production always reminds me of how great my country (Nigeria) could have been. Nigeria use to be at the top but then Malaysia took some seeds from our country, improved them through biotechnology and then sent us some miles down the chart.

Of course it's not just about orangutans, by far not. But people tend to pity the animals more than the humans that suffer from the results. And nobody really cares about climate change if not at least one cute animal is about to die.

actually you great news in this moment..and so sadness ever...

My country would make an orangutan's heaven then. We've got so many palm trees that we cut some down to get space for things :)
Funny enough hardly see any of these guys around. Interesting to know this.

human old future,

Palm plantations are very destructive in Asia and responsible for vast deforestation. It is used in most foods such as chocolate as it is cheaper than other oils.

Wow! Palm oils are more than rivals to Orangutan. Having chased them out of the homes, leaving them to wander and search for food. What's worse that could be done to the orangutans?. Well, in cases where food is limited or out of reach, what do they do?

We humans have to know how to check and balance things not letting our greed and quest cover our eyes.

Here's a great read for anyone wanting to study more about this problem.

Wow. I had no idea.
