Part 0: Introduction

Yagokoro Omoikane no Kami (八意思兼の神, lit. "the god of combining thoughts of eight hearts") is a shinto deity of Japanese mythology. A less cryptic translation of his name refers to him as "the god, who thinks together myriads of thoughts" for he is the deity of wisdom and intelligence. Legend has it, when the goddess of the sun and the universe Amaterasu hid inside a 'heavenly rock cave', in fury over her brother's misdoings against her, Omoikane was the one to unravel her hideout and convince her to return. Thusly, he brought back the sun after a long period of cold and darkness. This presents an important mythological event, that was depicted in many paintings by Japanese artists throughout the centuries (see for example figure 1).

As his name suggest, Omoikane is in a state of permanent pondering, weaving together all the thoughts he is keeping in his mind. This pretty much sums me up quite accurately as well (the 'pondering' part, not the 'deity' part ... I am not that megalomaniac). I am constantly being held hostage by an endless stream of thoughts, relentlessly orbiting around all kinds of mind melting topics, like little planets around a sun. Since this leaves me in a state of persistent sleep deprivation, I started writing blog posts about things that slowly drive me to the very verge of insanity... a form of cathartic self therapy. Despite the fact that Omoikane was not tortured by his manyfold of thoughts, since he had godly will power to manage them all - unlike me - I still found it quite fitting to call this project Omoikane's Legacy. It will revolve around all sorts of scientific and philosophical thoughts that I need to release from my brain. I will also use this as a side branch to delve deeper into some topics occurring within the other projects of my blog (Project // Digital Odyssey and Project // Kitchen Alchemy).
