Narwhals tusks have long been a source of fascination. Many believe that the Narwhal tusk gave rise to the myth of the Unicorn and they are thus also romantically known as 'unicorns of the sea'. Whilst it might seem that the most obvious use of the tusk would be for males to have fencing duels with each other over beautiful narwhal girls, since it is only the males that have the tusk. It appears that this is not the case however, the tusk has been shown to be highly sensitive and used to help the whales with echolocation and navigation.
In the last couple of days however, amazing new drone footage has been released by WWF Canada that shows how the narwhals use their tusks to strike and stun fish which are then easy to eat. A biological mystery has been solved thanks to the amazing technology of drones. Check out the video.
