Creatures who can SEE with their skin!

in science •  7 years ago

Almost like a superpower commonly found in fictional mythological creatures, cephalopods, a member of molluscan class Cephalopoda(whose members as octopus, squids) have eyes on their skins. This is due to the presence of Opsin, the same photosensitive protein present in retinas of our eyes, allowing them to detect light different frequencies .

Their skin contains sensory neurons that synthesize these proteins following which enzymes transmit signals from opsin molecules that have been activated by light to the interior of the cell to initiate cellular response.

This allows them to capture light from all different angles, and view the world in a manner different from how other organisms in the animal kingdom are used. It is almost like they have an additional dimension at their disposal.
