Each of the three green circles, is a colony of a type of algae called Volvox algae, consisting of more than 50,000 cells. Scientists study this type of freshwater organism as a model for how these creatures evolved their tissues and specialized cells. Where strings of cytoplasm bind adjacent cells and allow them to communicate among themselves, while a group of colonized labyrinths can move in water.
