I am able to understand 'donating' a persons old matress

And if a person is willing to gambel by sleeping on a used matress (thats that persons business). Diffrent people are bothered by diffrent things. To me I dont think that I would mind buying second hand clothes (although I am a little picky about second hand underware, in my mind a matress is in that 'gray' area. Kind of like a second hand toothbrush. But some people might not have the same barriers as what I have.
