Don't Be Robbed - Change Your Hive Keys Today!

in security •  5 years ago

The recent hostile takeover of the Steem blockchain is concerning to say the least. The place we once felt at home has turned into an outright tyranny of the gang and their cronies where majority of stake is turned against those who have decided to make use of their inherent rights to speak out against injustice.

And while the situation develops it thankfully occurred to me (albeit rather late) that there might be a major risk for those on Hive with what is happening on Steem, namely: the stealing of your keys, especially on Hive.

Since changes have been made to the operation of the Steem blockchain without community consent (now that witnesses are controlled by a single entity and its loyal minions) the unthinkable becomes thinkable and maybe even likely.

Now that stake has been stolen from people because of their allegedly "hostile stance" against being robbed and stepped on, nothing is impossible. The current "witnesses" who have allegedly deployed softfork 23.1 in response to the Robin Hood'ing of Steem's recent criminal #hardfork23 could easily decide tomorrow to go one step further and purge any and all accounts promoting Hive; accounts who are calling attention to the injustice that is happening on Steem.

It started with major stakeholders not in line with Stinc's and Justin Sun's "vision" for the Steem blockchain - but it might not stop there.

If they need Steem to become sterile from dissent, if they need to prepare it for the superficial masses who don't care about decentralization and freedom of speech then it seems only a question of time when the purge will go into the next round, citing ever and evermore outlandish political propaganda arguments to justify the #dissential-cleansing that is going on on Steem, down to the smallest of accounts.

And they might even use their position to launch cross-chain attacks - because you have not changed your keys!

SO, as you might have considered yourself already but may not have not done so yet due to lazyness: IT IS IMPECCABLE THAT YOU CHANGE YOUR KEYS FOR HIVE TODAY. If you don't then the gang on steem might be able to use the steem keys to get into your Hive account!!!

When the Hive chain started it became a copy of your Steem history including your master password and all the keys you use to post, transfer funds and vote witnesses. They keys are identical! Since we have no way of knowing how far the gang will dare to go in their remolding of the Steem platform and since we have ample evidence that Hive and its users are retaliated against for forking off to do their own thing it is essential you take your future on the blockchain seriously and change your HIVE keys TODAY.

Much of the recent upheaval on Steem could literally just be a distraction to steal the keys of Hive accounts while everyone is focussed on the drama that is unfolding.

Changing your master password will be enough as all related keys are automatically changed with it.

For that you simply go to "wallet" and then "change password". Make sure you are not distracted for 10 minutes or so, use the "generate random password" function and write your new key down slowly and steadily on piece of paper paying extra attention to each character (Capital or lower case matters!)

You then want to "re-enter the password" character by character from your sheet of paper, making absolutely sure you didn't include any typos. Do not copy paste your new password as this might open up for the possibility that you have indeed misspelled a character on your sheet, which will result in major problems down the line.

I know we should all be familiar with the custom of changing our password in uncertain times, just for extra security. But since it is in no way foreseeable how criminal the acts on steem will become it is prudent you do change your password now, in case you haven't already - and call attention to this need to all those who might not have done so already.

You may also consider changing your keys on Steem though now that Stinc is allegedly owned by Sun and the gang it might not be a good idea to use their interface for it. More technically-versed geeks out there have to make that call, not me.

I hate to sound cliché but: Not your keys - not your Hive ;)
