seedr.cc
simply put: this web service lets you download torrents anywhere on any device.
this is a god-send if you're one of the many people nowadays whose only computer is a smart phone or tablet---that's how i stumbled across it. but it goes beyond that: i'll be out with friends who tell me about some cool movie i should watch; i can start the download immediately before i forget (goldfish have a better memory than me); and then it's ready for me as soon as i get home!
alternatively, since downloading usually takes a matter of seconds, it's a great option for watching something that's not on netflix in the spur of the moment.
setup
- visit seedr.cc
- register with email
a. enter your email and a password, then click "register with email"
b. check your email for the verification link - or register with facebook
a. click the facebook "sign in" button
that's it! and if you use the link provided in step 1, you'll even receive an extra 500mb of free space!
dashboard
as soon as you log in, you're greeted with a sleek, familiar download interface. at the top, there's an input box for adding torrents:
copy/paste either a magnet link or a link to a .torrent file, hit enter, and your torrent will start downloading! for most torrents <1GB, it usually only ever takes ~10-15 seconds to finish downloading
after your torrent finishes, you have the option of either downloading to your machine or viewing it online for most file types.
wishlist
what happens if you want to add a torrent, but you've reached capacity? seedr.cc will automatically add your torrent to a "wishlist"---basically a bookmark folder---for you to easily download later!
so, for instance, right now i'm watching a few episodes of this show and ran out of space. but, as previously mentioned, i've got an atrocious memory and wanted to add some more torrents during the brief window where i was thinking about it. even though i was out of space, seedr.cc automatically added those new torrents to my wishlist.
now, whenever i'm done with my current episodes, i can delete the files i've already watched (download them to your machine first if you want), click my wishlist, and then choose "add to seedr" for the files i want to start downloading next! it's all pretty slick---it's just a few clicks on the dashboard without navigating anywhere extra---and in under a minute i'm watching the new downloads :)
media player
if you download a media file, you'll be able to play it in the browser without downloading anything. so far, i haven't come across a media type that they couldn't handle.
notice in the screenshot that there's a "cc" button in the top right of the player for captions. click on it, they'll pull up a list of caption files that match your video's filename, and you can select one to use:
so even if your torrent doesn't come with captions, you can find and use captions for virtually any video.
extension
seedr provides a browser extension that lets you:
- set https://seedr.cc/ as your default torrent client.
- quickly add torrents to your account
if you set the seedr website as your default torrent client, you can just click on any magnet link to automatically add it to your account. alternatively, you can right click and add a link to a torrent. cool feature: seedr isn't very picky about what link you choose! you don't have to link directly to a .torrent
file. you can use a torrent's description page as well, and seedr automagically finds the download information for you (this works when adding torrents through the input box on their website as well)!
free upgrade
by default, free accounts are limited to 2gb of space, but seedr offers 2 ways for anyone to easily grab up to 1.5gb extra:
simply tweet a message for 500mb and write a blog post like this one for up to 1 extra gb. and don't worry if you feel like you're not articulate! just spend 5 minutes tweeting then writing something using some free blogging platforms, and you'll get at least 1gb of extra space for free :)
premium
if you find you really enjoy the service, they offer several tiers of premium options:
at the time of writing, you can get:
free | basic | pro | master |
---|---|---|---|
$0.00 | $6.95/mo | $9.95/mo | $19.95/mo |
2-3.5gb | 30gb | 100gb | 1tb |
1 download at a time | 2 concurrent downloads | 5 concurrent downloads | 25 concurrent downloads |
all premium plans also come with the option of choosing your download/streaming server, which should improve speeds if that's an issue for you (it hasn't been for me) or if you're concerned about legalities.
for free, you can have access to literally any media content from anywhere on any device. and for less than netflix or a nice burger, you can hold up to ~30 movies or 60 tv shows at one time. that's pretty spiffy.
misc
you can right click any file you've torrented and copy the download link. that means you can easily share your downloads with friends (but be aware that it seems basic plans allow only 1 download at a time).
you also have the ability to upload your own content. so seedr could be a decent option for easily sharing large files with friends---simply upload the file and then copy its download link.
conclusion
this is one of the only options i've found for torrenting on iOS. it's just icing on the cake that it also happens to be awesome and free. i still use transmission for most of my torrenting needs (update: i actually use seedr for virtually all of my torrenting now), but especially right now during covid---when hanging out with friends usually means hanging out online---this is a great way to download shows/movies for everyone to watch together online. if something we want to watch isn't available on netflix, it takes <1 minute to start enjoying it from searching for the torrent to pressing play.
it's convenient, easy, fast, and just plain awesome. sign up with this link, and you'll receive an extra 500mb of space for free!
I totally agree with you because I also use torrents to get a better and faster free download of any file that I need. I often use the pirate bay and I know this tool will never let me down. That's why I grab all the features this platform gives me. I'm sure you know what I'm talking about here. Torrent is an important thing even in 2021, isn't it?
