Seers in the Bible: The prophecy of one who hears the words of God, who has knowledge from the Most High

The Bible tells us the story of Balaam, a great magician and fortune-teller called by the King of Moab, Balak, to stop the arrival of the people of Israel to the promised land. In the face of God's providence, the Bible tells us, the magical arts are useless, there are many cases of seers in the sacred scriptures, but this story has something in particular, the fortuneteller becomes a prophet, and whoever is called to curse become a mouthpiece for the word of God. The practice of divination is considered in the Bible as the gateway to the sin of idolatry, God communicates to men through prophets; the security in God and not simple faith in the promises of God given by the prophets, is what keeps the chosen people in the correct road.
The story begins with the call of Balak: "Now come and put a curse on these people, because they are too powerful to me. Perhaps then I will be able to defeat them and drive them out of the land. For I know that whoever you bless is blessed, and whoever you curse is cursed" Numbers 22:6.
But Balaam rejects Balak's first invitation, but then the King of Moab sends a second entourage more important than the first, and Balaam inspired by God decides to go see Balak.
Balak takes Balaam to see the people of Israel at four different times, and at each of them a sacrifice is offered to God and Balaam makes four oracles.
In the last oracle, Balaam prophesies the end of the Kingdom of Moab, so it begins: "The prophecy of Balaam son of Beor, the prophecy of one whose eye sees clearly, the prophecy of one who hears the words of God, who has knowledge from the Most High, who sees a vision from the Almighty, who falls prostrate, and who eyes are opened" Numbers 24:15-16.
And then he ends by saying: "Edom will be conquered; Seir, his enemy, will be conquered, but Israel will grow strong" Numbers 24:18.
This explains something very important, a seer cannot use his abilities to change the future, what God has already predetermined in some way cannot be changed. When a prophecy is true, in this case the promise of the land, everything that is done against it only reinforces it and this is what Balak does not understand and that is why he fails.
